Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Your Rental Home
The towns in which Gorman Property Management manages properties – Pacific Grove, Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel – all have requirements regarding smoke detectors. There are state laws and municipal laws that govern the use of these safety items.
As with anything having to do with safety at the rental homes and apartments that Gorman Property Management manages, we take seriously our responsibility to provide safe housing for our residents. When smoke and carbon monoxide detectors starting being made with 10-year lithium batteries, Gorman Property Management embraced this new technology.
Gorman Property Management’s Smoke Detector Policy
It is Gorman Property Management’s policy to provide a smoke detector in each bedroom and any central hallway outside a zone in a home or apartment in which people sleep. We also outfit each home or apartment with a carbon monoxide detector on each level of the home or apartment. It is not necessary or advisable to install smoke detectors in a kitchen or bathroom area, as smoke or steam will set them off every time someone cooks or takes a shower.
We like to use the lithium batteries because they cannot be removed. They have a 10-year life span. At the end of 10 years, the smoke or carbon monoxide detector is simply replaced.
Gorman Property Management inspects the interior of each home or apartment we manage. When we do this inspection, we verify that the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. We care very much about the safety of our residents. If you are a tenant who rents from Gorman Real Estate, please check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors frequently by pushing the test button on each detector. Be sure to let us know if any of them are not working properly. We will replace any nonfunctional smoke detectors promptly and at no charge to our resident.
